Very adjustable, but is it worth it?
The new X-Man Tornado V5 is finally here! Tornado cubes are famous for being luxurious and smooth, and the new V5 comes packed with tons of adjustments. But it also has a few flaws that are good to know about before you buy. Let’s check it out!
Unboxing experience
First things first, the unboxing experience feels premium. The box has a fresh new look, and you get X-Man’s classic magnetic plastic case. But the absolute best part is the cube bag which is without a doubt, the best-looking and most luxurious bag out of all the brands! You also get manuals for different solving methods and a screwdriver to adjust your cube.
When you do your first turns, you’ll notice that the cube is light, fast, and feels nice and crisp. This is exactly what most speedcubers love! It’s a really fast puzzle, especially if you pick the Pioneer version with MagLev. It also handles lube super well, but don’t add too much heavy lube, or it will get slow and gummy right away.
Pros
The best part about the Tornado V5 is that you can change almost everything to fit your style:
-
Tons of options: You get 8 different settings for both tension and elasticity. This is more than on previous Tornado cubes.
-
UV-coating on both: This time, BOTH the Flagship and Pioneer versions have the glossy and grippy UV-surface right from the start. We love this.
-
Great piece magnets: The edge and corner magnet settings have a really good range. You can set them up to feel anywhere from weak to strong.
Cons
Even though it’s a great cube, X-Man missed the mark on a few things:
-
Hard to see the numbers: The adjustment wheel inside the corners (for the core magnets) has numbers from 1 to 9, but they are very hard to read. Plus, the core magnets feel pretty weak, even on the highest setting (9).
-
Hurts your fingers to adjust: X-Man removed the handy little plastic handles from the V3 and V4. This might not feel like much of a problem, but in combination with the wheel being very stiff and hard to turn, it’s a legit problem and can hurt your nails just trying to adjust the cube. The wheel is so stiff in fact, that sometimes the whole centerpiece spins instead of just the wheel.
-
Breaking easily: When adjusting the edge magnets, it’s easy for the tool to leave dents in the plastic.
-
Lockups: Unless you set the cube pretty tight, it can lock up a bit when you do your algorithms fast.
Flagship vs. Pioneer: Which one should you get?
-
Pioneer (MagLev): This one has a 20-magnet core and MagLev (magnets instead of springs). It is very fast, and the 20 BC helps with auto alignment of the layers.
-
Flagship (Springs): This one has an 8-magnet core and traditional springs. It is more flexible, a bit slower and easier to control.
The Verdict: Is the Tornado V5 for you?
If you prefer a super stable, heavy cube that feels solid when you turn (like the MoYu WeiLong V10), you might not like this one. But if you love a cube that is loose, super flexible, fast, and crispy – you are going to love the Tornado V5, especially on loose settings!
