Are you looking for a speedcube but don’t know what to buy? There is an incredible variety of cubes, and each model has its pros and cons. Here we have put together a buying guide to help you choose the right cube. Good luck!
Dayan TengYun has long been a favorite of many, both among our customers and among the world’s elite. The cube is very stable, neither too fast nor too slow and cut corners well. It is very soft when turned and also known for being one of the quietest cubes on the market.
The Moyu Weilong WR M 2021 is a state-of-the-art speedcube. The cube is trendy, light and airy and very fast. The cube performs really well in all aspects and has a smart, fast and flexible adjustment system to allow for personal preferences.
This is the most luxurious cube until 2022. The cube is highly customizable with adjustable magnet strength, tension and pressure between the pieces. “UV” means that a protective thin coating has been placed on the plastic to prevent wear and tear, and the cube comes with a host of accessories.
The Yuxin Little Magic 4×4 M is an affordable 4×4. The cube performs well enough to be used at competitions. At the same time, it comes in at a low price, especially considering that the cube is magnetic. Lubrication of the cube is recommended for the best possible performance.
The Moyu Aosu WR M is a really good speedcube from Moyu. The cube is faster than the above cubes. In addition, the cube is magnetized, which compensates for the speed and makes the cube well balanced and controllable.
The YJ MGC 5×5 is very good as a speedcube in all aspects. The cube performs on par with the absolute best cubes from 2019 and onwards, and despite this, the price is half the price of flagships from competing brands. Here you don’t have to think too much!
According to many, the fastest and best 6×6 cube on the market during the last couple of years. Stable, lock up resistant and magnetic. It works just as well as a hobby cube for home use as for those who compete in speedcubing.
Excellent 7×7 speedcube for a reasonable price. The cube is stable while being fast and cuts corners well. Plus, it’s magnetized, which means it stays cube-shaped and helps you pull the layers into the correct position even when you’re turning quickly!
The Moyu RS Pyraminx M is a Pyraminx that we highly recommend to beginners. The turns flow well and it has magnets that make the layers snap into place after each turn. In addition, it comes equipped with Moyu’s double adjustment system, which if possible, makes the puzzle even more affordable.
The X-Man Bell is a really fast Pyraminx. Instead of using ball bearings to create hard “clicks” at the end of a move, this puzzle uses magnets. This allows you to get a good flow in the algorithms at the same time as the puzzle always settles in place for the next series of moves. Note that for a beginner it can feel a bit sloppy due to the speed and that it cuts corners well. But you will probably appreciate how soft and smooth it turns!
GAN has become known as a luxury brand for Speedcubes and the GAN Pyraminx is no exception. This a really high quality Pyraminx with a new modern magnetization system. Of course, it is fast and smooth in the moves.
When it comes to Megaminx, we’re going to make it easy for you. YJ Yuhu Megaminx V2 M is currently the best Megaminx on the market according to many of the pros. It is also comes in at a very reasonable price, which makes it easy to recommend.
For those of you who have a lower budget, we can recommend the Qiyi Qiheng S. The cube is made by the same company as the X-Man Galaxy. The Megaminx is of good quality and performs incredibly well considering the price.
The Moyu Weilong Skewb Maglev is a really good Skewb used by elite level speedcubers all over the world. This Skewb comes magnetized and with a MagLev system. In addition, it has Moyu’s dual adjustment system as well as an adjustable magnet strength.
This Skewb is produced with the price in mind, but is nevertheless perhaps the most priceworthy Skewb available for purchase. It is both fast and fully adjustable and could really compete with most other flagships in the Skewb market.
GAN has become known as a luxury brand when it comes to Speedcubes and this cube is no exception. The GAN Skewb is at the time of writing (2022) the only Skewb with a magnetic core. It is light, fast and smooth while turning. This cube was used to break the world record in Skewb at the end of 2021.
For the beginner, the Shengshou Magnetic Clock is a good option. For its price, the puzzle performs well, and is therefore suitable for those who may want to try this official competition event for the first time. If, however, you then really start to like the event, the puzzle below is strongly recommended instead.
The Qiyi Magnetic Clock is considered by many insiders to be one of the most revolutionary releases of a puzzle in a decade. Compared to all competitors on the market, the quality difference is huge. This puzzle is straight out of the box very fast and easy to turn. The over 200 magnets inside the puzzle also ensure that every single move and every single clock always ends up in the right position between moves. With the Qiyi Magnetic Clock, the experience of solving a Clock suddenly becomes a joy.
Sometimes it can be difficult to determine from a picture how difficult a puzzle is. Below are some recommendations for those looking for easy puzzles. All the cubes below are easier to solve than a Rubik’s cube (3×3). Note that these do not include Pyraminx and Skewb, which are also a slightly easier puzzles.
For the beginner
The Ivy Cube suits you who have never solved a cube before and don’t really want to tackle a Rubik’s cube just yet. We believe that most people can solve an Ivy cube without the use of a guide – if you just sit and figure it out and try your way.
The Qiyi 223 is, as the name reveals, a 2x2x3 cube. It has a small number of pieces, but can be a bit trickier than it looks. Oddly enough, it is easier than a regular 2×2 cube and thus makes it onto this list.
This is a fidget spinner and a puzzle in one. The puzzle changes shape when you turn it, which makes it extra fun to fiddle with. However, this does not mean extra difficulty, on the contrary, it makes it easier to solve.
The YJ Rainbow ball is a slightly different puzzle. Here, you are not twisting different layers. Instead, you must move balls around to the correct position. Here it is important to match the right ball with the right hole. Yellow ball inside yellow circle means that part is solved. When all the balls match their circle, the puzzle is solved. The puzzle is not that difficult, so you can solve it without a guide.
Here are recommendations for those of you looking for moderately difficult puzzles. These are on par with or slightly more difficult than the classic Rubik’s cube (3×3), but still not too difficult. Note that this category does not contain Megaminx and 4×4 although they would fit in here, as they have their own categories.
Harder than it looks
At first glance, you might think that this can be solved like the first two layers of a regular 3×3, but this is not the case. The fact that the top layer is missing actually makes it more difficult in some aspects and here you can’t use the algorithms you learned for the 3×3 cube.
Mirror Blocks are a classic and one of the more common cubes to transition to from a 3×3. This is basically a 3×3, but here you work with shape instead of color. You can use the algorithms you already learned to solve a 3×3.
Just like the Mirror Blocks, a Fisher cube is a puzzle that changes shape when you turn it. The puzzle is quite similar to the classic 3×3 cube but has a diagonal axis that causes the pieces to take a different shape. The puzzle is solved quite like a 3×3, but with a twist.
If you want a completely new challenge, perhaps putting on a blindfold is enough? On this cube, all stickers on each side have a unique pattern in addition to their color. This way you can first memorize what the six different patterns look like, and then try to solve the cube without looking or inspecting. Not only are you not allowed to check, but you will also notice how difficult it is to use your usual methods and algorithms when the pieces and impressions no longer feel obvious.
Sometimes it can be difficult to determine from a picture how difficult a puzzle is. Below are some recommendations for those looking for difficult puzzles. The puzzles below are all much more difficult than a Rubik’s Cube.
Harder than it looks
A square-1 does not have a large number of pieces, but despite this it is quite a challenge. This is largely due to the fact that the middle layer can only be turned in one place. Thus, you have to match up the top and bottom layer before you can slice. Square-1 is a unique challenge that stands out from the rest. Really hard but also really satisfying when you finally succeed.
This one may look a little different compared to a 3×3, but basically it’s the exact same cube. This is a cool modification that allows you to work with shape instead of color. When the cube is scrambled, it is barely recognizable and figuring out which piece goes where is something that takes time. If you solve this in a few hours, you can be satisfied.
The Curvy copter is an interesting puzzle that can offer you two different levels of difficulty in one and the same puzzle. The levels of difficulty can be described as difficult and even more difficult. Read more on the product page.
The Super Ivy Cube builds on the classic Ivy Cube, which we recommend in the easy puzzle category. However, this variant is much more difficult and the Ivy Cube has now gone from one of the easiest puzzles to one of the hardest.
Smart cubes are Rubik’s cubes that can be connected to your mobile phone or tablet. Each move is then tracked in an app and you can, among other things, measure time and see statistics on your solves.
Overall the best smart cube
The Giiker cube is, in our opinion, the overall best smart cube and is suitable for beginners as well as experienced cube solvers. In the app there is timed solving and statistics, but also many fun games to play with where you manipulate the game by turning the cube. It’s great fun and a really good product overall!
The GAN 356i Carry is the best choice of smart cube if you are looking for a speedcube. This cube performs better than the Giiker cube when it comes to the hardware itself, such as corner cutting. The app is also better adapted to speedcubing (timed solves), but it doesn’t have any games.
One drop of Luboss Drive is enough to make the cube really fast. Drive was developed with the help of Speedcubing master Daniel Wallin and quickly became a favorite among our customers. The lubricant also makes the cube a little smoother while turning.
Cubicle Silk is a lubricant that softens the cube and gives it a smooth feel. The thickness is medium, the lubricant lasts a long time in the cube. Simply a well-balanced lube that fits well in all cubes.
Cubicle Weight 5 is a thick lubricant that lasts an extremly long time. This makes the lubricant absolutely excellent for use in the core (washers, springs, screws). You can also use it on the pieces of the cube to give a soft and more controllable feel. If you use a lot, the cube becomes slower, which makes the lubricant perfect if your cube is difficult to control.
You can mix several different lubricants to get the effects of all of them. For example, you can use Silk to make the cube smooth during turns and then add Drive to make it fast. Do you think the cube feels a bit too fast? Why not add Weight 5 to the core (or pieces) and make the cube quieter at the same time.
Some bonus tips: We like to use Lubicle Speedy in GAN cubes. DNM-37 is a very popular water-based lubricant that makes the cube fast without affecting the feel of the cube.
