Class 3 - The Rubik's cube and similar puzzles
Class 4 - Harder than the classic Rubik's cube
Class 5 - Very difficult puzzles
Checklist and tips
Do you think there are too many cubes in the list above? Here is some guidance on which path you can take in the choice of cubes. We assume that you have and can solve a 3×3 Rubik’s cube.
- If you want to try easier cubes, we recommend you try Pyraminx and Skewb. Both of these are easier than a Rubik’s Cube but are fun and popular competitions events. So if you start getting fast at solving either of these, you can move on to more advanced methods and even compete.
If you want to try something that is not a competition event, you can try the Redi Cube or a 3×3 Gear cube. Both are popular and fun cubes.
- If you want to try something a bit trickier than a 3×3, we recommend the Megaminx, which is also a competition event. A Megaminx looks a lot harder than it actually is – so if you can solve the 3×3 cube, you will also be able to learn how to solve a Megaminx without any major problems. Other cubes you should try are different kinds of “shape mods”, which is basically a 3×3 but with a different shape. It is often fun to solve one of these after learning the 3×3 cube because you can build on the techniques you have already learned. Examples of 3×3 shape mods are the Qiyi Windmill cube, Qiyi Cylinder cube, Qiyi Mirror blocks, YJ Axis cube V2 and Z Cube twist 3×3.
- Looking for a challenge? Learn to solve the 4×4 or 5×5. These are both competitive and very popular. You can also try a Cuboid, we recommend Calvins’ 3x3x5. DianSheng FTO is another puzzle that has become very popular lately and some even have wishes for it to become a competition event. The Mastermorphix and DianSheng Case cube are examples of more difficult Shape mods if you want to try one of those. More difficult versions of previous puzzles you have learned can also be included here. For example, the 4×4 Pyraminx or a Gigaminx. The Gigaminx works as a combination of a 5×5 and a Megaminx – so if you can solve these two puzzles, you can most likely solve the Gigaminx without a guide.
- If you want something really difficult, don’t be fooled by the number of layers on a puzzle – it can often be misleading. In the suggestions above, we show for example a 9×9 and a Teraminx. But keep in mind that the actual solving method is the same for a Gigaminx, Teraminx and Petaminx. More pieces in this case mostly means that you have to do the same thing over and over again. It works the same way with, for example, a 6×6 and a 10×10. If you manage to solve the 6×6 cube, you can in theory solve a 100×100 using the same method. Worth noting here, however, is that there are differences between cubes with even and uneven layers. The 6×6 cube is solved like an 8×8 while a 9×9 is solved like an 11×11. So if you want to try two different sized cubes, we recommend that you try one with an odd number of layers and one with an even number of layers. For example, a 6×6 and a 7×7 or a 9×9 and a 10×10. A popular shape mod is the so-called Ghost cube. It’s basically a 3×3, so theoretically you can solve it using exactly the same algorithms you already know. But the crazy shape makes it incredibly difficult. Again, we can recommend the Square-1, which is perhaps the hardest competition event. But if you manage to get good at it, you can actually solve it really quickly.
Easy puzzles
Sometimes it can be difficult to determine from a picture how difficult a puzzle is. Below are some recommendations for those looking for easy puzzles. All the cubes below are easier to solve than a Rubik’s cube (3×3). Note that these do not include Pyraminx and Skewb, which are also a slightly easier puzzles.
For the beginner
The Ivy Cube suits you who have never solved a cube before and don’t really want to tackle a Rubik’s cube just yet. We believe that most people can solve an Ivy cube without the use of a guide – if you just sit and figure it out and try your way.

Easier than it looks
The Qiyi 223 is, as the name reveals, a 2x2x3 cube. It has a small number of pieces, but can be a bit trickier than it looks. Oddly enough, it is easier than a regular 2×2 cube and thus makes it onto this list.

Puzzle and toy
This is a fidget spinner and a puzzle in one. The puzzle changes shape when you turn it, which makes it extra fun to fiddle with. However, this does not mean extra difficulty, on the contrary, it makes it easier to solve.

Something different
The YJ Rainbow ball is a slightly different puzzle. Here, you are not twisting different layers. Instead, you must move balls around to the correct position. Here it is important to match the right ball with the right hole. Yellow ball inside yellow circle means that part is solved. When all the balls match their circle, the puzzle is solved. The puzzle is not that difficult, so you can solve it without a guide.

Medium difficulty puzzles
Here are recommendations for those of you looking for moderately difficult puzzles. These are on par with or slightly more difficult than the classic Rubik’s cube (3×3), but still not too difficult. Note that this category does not contain Megaminx and 4×4 although they would fit in here, as they have their own categories.
Harder than it looks
At first glance, you might think that this can be solved like the first two layers of a regular 3×3, but this is not the case. The fact that the top layer is missing actually makes it more difficult in some aspects and here you can’t use the algorithms you learned for the 3×3 cube.

A classic
Mirror Blocks are a classic and one of the more common cubes to transition to from a 3×3. This is basically a 3×3, but here you work with shape instead of color. You can use the algorithms you already learned to solve a 3×3.

A shapeshifter
Just like the Mirror Blocks, a Fisher cube is a puzzle that changes shape when you turn it. The puzzle is quite similar to the classic 3×3 cube but has a diagonal axis that causes the pieces to take a different shape. The puzzle is solved quite like a 3×3, but with a twist.

Something different
If you want a completely new challenge, perhaps putting on a blindfold is enough? On this cube, all stickers on each side have a unique pattern in addition to their color. This way you can first memorize what the six different patterns look like, and then try to solve the cube without looking or inspecting. Not only are you not allowed to check, but you will also notice how difficult it is to use your usual methods and algorithms when the pieces and impressions no longer feel obvious.

Difficult puzzles
Sometimes it can be difficult to determine from a picture how difficult a puzzle is. Below are some recommendations for those looking for difficult puzzles. The puzzles below are all much more difficult than a Rubik’s Cube.
Harder than it looks
A square-1 does not have a large number of pieces, but despite this it is quite a challenge. This is largely due to the fact that the middle layer can only be turned in one place. Thus, you have to match up the top and bottom layer before you can slice. Square-1 is a unique challenge that stands out from the rest. Really hard but also really satisfying when you finally succeed.

The toughest 3×3 cube
This one may look a little different compared to a 3×3, but basically it’s the exact same cube. This is a cool modification that allows you to work with shape instead of color. When the cube is scrambled, it is barely recognizable and figuring out which piece goes where is something that takes time. If you solve this in a few hours, you can be satisfied.

Cuboss Speedcube Lube – Weight 5
For the core – and the pieces
Cuboss Speedcube Lube – Weight 5 is a thick lubricant that lasts an extremly long time. This makes the lubricant excellent for use in the core (washers, springs, screws). You can also use it on the pieces of the cube to give a soft and more controllable feel. If you use a lot, the cube becomes slower, which makes the lubricant perfect if your cube is difficult to control.

Extra tips
You can mix several different lubricants to get the effects of all of them. For example, you can use Drive to make the cube smooth while turning and then add Rapid to make it fast. Do you think the cube feels a bit too fast? Why not add Weight 5 to the core (or pieces) and make the cube quieter at the same time.
