New Speed Cubes

MoYu RS3 M 2021 MagLev Review Pros: Great performance for the price Fast, with a great balance between stability and flexibility Cons: On the heavy side No auto-alignment Rating: 8/10 I bought this RS3M 2021 MagLev to learn the CMLLs for the Roux method (by swapping pieces between two RS3Ms that I own: this one and a 2020 RS3M Black with the stickers removed). The RS3M 2021 MagLev is a stable cube that doesn't catch or lock up. Corner cutting is good, and it's definitely fast. Faster than both the RS3M Super MagLev and the RS3M V5 Ball-Core I own. It does have a couple of drawbacks: No auto-alignment. Being a 2021 cube, it has neither corner-to-core magnets nor a ball core. As a result, it doesn't auto-align or snap into place, and because it's fast and the magnets are a bit weak, it tends to overshoot (although you can double up the magnets). It's heavy. By today's standards, this thing is a brick. That said, it's not hard to turn at all - it's incredibly smooth. The real issue is that your hands start to feel the weight during very long cubing sessions. I definitely wouldn't call this cube outdated. Once set up and lubed, it feels buttery smooth, quiet, fast, and more enjoyable to use than many other cubes out there. The frosted surface also turns glossy pretty quickly just using it. Even though, like many of you reading this, I own plenty of newer, more sophisticated, and more hyped cubes, I still use this one as a backup for my main in 2026, my GuHong Pro+ (which is actually my all-time favorite, despite being just as affordable). Funny how the two cubes I like the most are also the two I paid the least for. A possible mod for this cube If you'd like to give this 2021 MagLev a ball core, here's something worth knowing: the pieces from the RS3M 2021 Maglev and the RS3M V5 Ball-Core are interchangeable. You can keep the 2021's corners and edges and combine them with the V5's ball core and corner-to-core magnets by swapping the corner stems between the two cubes. I actually did this hybrid mod myself, and the resulting cube is phenomenal - but it's even heavier, a freaking tank 😀 Thankfully, it's a completely reversible mod, and you can do and undo it (carefully!) with no issues 😉

After years of using GAN, MoYu, and QiYi flagships, I decided to try something different: a cube that is widely considered to offer great performance for a very affordable price. I went for the DaYan GuHong Pro+ with springs, in the 56 mm version (I prefer larger cubes). I bought it without particularly high expectations, more out of curiosity than anything else. And when it arrived… what a surprise! I had never owned a DaYan cube before, although I had tried a friend's DaYan 2x2 and liked it quite a lot. After comparing it side by side with a GAN 251, I actually preferred the DaYan. So I decided to try this budget 3x3 as well. Well, wow! This cube is delightful. The turning is smooth, and it has auto-alignment, but nothing too strong (unlike the WRM V9, whose magnets feel way too strong for my taste). It is flexible without feeling like it is about to pop apart. I don't feel any of those tiny catches while turning that I get with the GAN 12… and other GAN cubes as well. It is fast, but never uncontrollable. And then there's the finish: glossy, neither frosted nor UV-coated. Simple glossy plastic. Simply perfect for me. Of course, there are a couple of minor drawbacks. First: the glossy surface tends to develop many tiny scratches. They are barely noticeable and can only really be seen under certain light angle if you look closely. You can't feel them at all touching the surface. Second: the tensioning system. I've tried adjusting it to the tightest setting, the loosest setting, and everything in between. Yet, to me, the cube feels practically identical. Tighten it, loosen it… nothing seems to change. This isn't an issue for me, because the GuHong Pro+ feels pretty much perfect out of the box (at least for me). However, anyone who enjoys experimenting with different settings might be disappointed. In other words, you have to like it just the way it is. The setting numbers are also extremely hard to see and the adjustment system isn't particularly intuitive (imho). That said, these are flaws that have virtually no impact on my personal experience with the cube. And this brings me to my final point. I don't consider the DaYan GuHong Pro+ the best cube I own for its price. I consider it the best cube I own. Period.
