Beginner's FTO Tutorial
Starting in 2027, FTO will become an official event at speedcubing competitions! We noticed, however, that the beginners’ tutorials that were currently published were either not very easy to learn or very move inefficient. We therefore decided to create our own beginners’ method that we believe is the simplest and best beginners’ method to learn. We published two different videos on it: a long and in depth one and also a shorter version, which is perfect if you have some previous speedcubing knowledge and simply want to just learn FTO as quickly as possible.
FAQ
This method reduces intuitive steps and instead uses a layer-by-layer approach, very similar to the classic 3×3 beginner methods. It does save the centers for last, which can then be solved with simple center-swapping algorithms.
The most common method among serious FTO solvers is the Bencisco method. While there are beginner variations for this method, they are not as easy to learn. Hence why we created this tutorial. If you already know, however, that you want to become very serious in FTO and become really fast, you are free to learn the Bencisco method from the get-go if you want.
Most people who would want to learn an FTO beginner’s method do already know how to solve a classic 3×3. Given that the middle layer edges in this method are solved with combinations of sexy moves on left and right, there are really only two additional algorithms to learn and they are very simple to memorize.
No! It is actually quite easy to learn how to solve an FTO using this tutorial. If you already have a lot of experience with 3×3 solving for example, you can go straight to the five-minute version of this tutorial since it will only introduce the specific concepts that you need to know to solve the FTO.
At the time of writing the best FTO-puzzle on the market is the Dayan FTO M Ball Core. In case you want to save a couple bucks, you can also go for the DianSheng FTO Neo, which is also a high performing pick. If you just want to try the puzzle out for the first time and don’t care too much about performance, the ShengShou FTO is a very affordable pick with a version that is priced below €10.
